Introduction to Chevrolet Bolt

 Introduction to Chevrolet Bolt

The Chevrolet Bolt represents a new generation of affordable, long-range electric car. Its price should be around $30,000 in the US. In Europe its marketing will take place through the Opel Ampera-e.

Chevrolet Bolt battery and range

Presented as a new generation electric car, the Chevrolet Bolt aims for a range greater than 383 kilometers in the American cycle, or more than 400 km in the European NEDC cycle, and will use a battery supplied by the Korean group LG Chem.

Made up of 288 cells divided into 10 modules and placed in a horizontal position, the battery has 60 kWh of energy capacity and 160 kW of power. Weighing 435 kilos, it has an energy density of 137 Wh/kg, thus defining new standards for mainstream electric cars.

Chevrolet Bolt electric motor

The Chevrolet Bolt will be powered by a 150 horsepower, 360 Nm electric motor supplied by the Korean LG group, allowing a maximum speed of 145 km/h and a 0 to 100 km/h time of 7 seconds.

Charging the Chevrolet Bolt

Beyond its domestic charging socket, the Bolt will be compatible with Combo CCS fast charging which will allow it to recover 80% of energy in less than 45 minutes. The fast charger will nevertheless be optional on the car.

In AC, it will offer a 7.2 kW charger as standard allowing a complete recharge in around 9 hours.

Chevrolet Bolt interior

Inspired by feedback from Chevrolet Volt users, the interior of the Bolt offers a range of connected equipment:

  • 10.2 inch touch screen located in the center of the dashboard
  • Onstar 4G connection acting as a wifi transmitter
  • Reversing camera and “birdview” system making maneuvering easier
  • Range calculator taking into account battery capacity, weather conditions, route topography and user driving habits
  • Adjusting the intensity of the engine brake on the steering wheel
  • Saving multiple user profiles

The Bolt can accommodate up to 5 passengers.

Price and marketing of the Chevrolet Bolt

On the North American market, the Bolt will be priced around $29,995 less federal aid ($7,500). Its production will begin at the end of 2016 for distribution in the US immediately.
