In July, for the first time, BMW was the biggest seller of electric cars in Europe. It overtook Tesla, which continues to fall.
Last month, while overall sales increased slightly in Europe (+2%, to 1.03 million cars), those of electric cars fell. According to data compiled by Jato, 139,300 electric models were registered, a decline of 6%. Their market share fell back to 13.5%, compared to 14.6% in July 2023.
The Tesla Model Y remained the king of electric car sales, with 9,544 units. It finished far ahead of the Volvo EX30 (6,573) and the Volkswagen ID.4 (5,295). But it continues to fall, with a marked decline of 16% in July. Its sister Model 3 also plunged by 17%, with 4,694 sales.
Consequence: if we look at the ranking of electric sales by brand, Tesla loses its number 1 spot. In July, BMW did better, albeit by a small margin. The German registered 14,869 electric vehicles, 308 more than its rival. But it benefits from an increasingly wide range of products, since almost its entire range offers an electric variant. Its total is thus up 35%.
Its best seller is the iX1, with 4,305 sales. The model is also doing very well in France, thanks to variants that have entered the bonus zone. The i4 is also continuing a good career, with another 4,198 sales in July. The iX2 is off to a good start, with 1,200 deliveries.
In terms of electrics, BMW is thus well ahead of its major rivals: in July, Audi delivered 8,618 models of this type, Mercedes was at 8,365. The latter are also surpassed by Volvo (10,533), itself close to Volkswagen (12,213).
