Major recall for the electric Mini due to a fire risk

Major recall for the previous electric Mini. The cause: the battery can take on water and catch fire.

While Mini is launching the new generation of its electric city car, the previous one is making headlines again because of a major recall. This one seems to affect the entire production of the Cooper SE version, which was launched at the end of 2019, or more than 140,000 units.

The reason? Poor sealing of the battery. Moreover, an alert on the “Consumer Recall” website was given this summer. We can read this on the sheet describing the recall in France: “The high-voltage (HV) battery housing may not be waterproof, which risks entering the water”.

If this happens, the driver is warned by the car. But “ignoring this warning may cause the HV battery to stop mid-trip, causing the vehicle to slow down to a stop, creating a risk of accidents and injuries. In addition, there is a risk of fire, even when the vehicle is parked." This problem has already caused a fire in the United States and one in Germany, without causing any injuries.

Customers are being contacted to arrange a workshop intervention. We are awaiting details for the French market.
