Foxconn's Next Big Move: Introducing the Large Electric Minivan, Model D

Foxconn Model D electric minivan design by Pininfarina

The Taiwanese tech giant, Foxconn, is venturing further into the automotive industry with an ambitious new project: a large electric MPV known as the Foxconn Model D. As with previous Foxconn vehicles, this new model will be released under a different brand, staying true to the company’s strategy.

Foxconn, better known for manufacturing iPhones, has been steadily building its presence in the automotive world over the past few years. The group’s goal is to go beyond being a mere contract manufacturer and instead become a comprehensive partner capable of managing every stage of vehicle production—from design to component supply and assembly. This vision operates under the Foxtron brand, specifically created for Foxconn’s automotive pursuits.

A Turnkey Solution for Automakers

It’s important to note that Foxtron itself isn’t aiming to become a consumer-facing car brand. Instead, Foxtron models are designed to attract other manufacturers who are looking for ready-made solutions. For example, the Foxtron Model C SUV evolved into the Luxgen n7, tailored to fit another brand’s needs. The new Model D is expected to follow a similar path, potentially seeing future production under Luxgen in Taiwan or as part of Saudi Arabia’s new national brand, Ceer.

A Look at the Model D

The Model D is a sizable electric minivan—measuring 5.20 meters in length with a 3.20-meter wheelbase—making it especially spacious. Given its size, the vehicle includes features like four-wheel steering and air suspension to improve maneuverability, even in urban environments.

Foxconn focuses on the technical aspects of the Model D while leaving the design to the renowned Pininfarina. The front of the minivan features a short hood, while the rear window has a sleek tilt, reminiscent of the Xpeng X9. Despite its size, the Model D boasts impressive aerodynamics, with a drag coefficient (Cx) of 0.23. The design can also be customized according to the preferences of the manufacturer interested in this adaptable, turnkey vehicle.

Spacious, Luxurious Interior

One of the Model D's standout features is its interior, designed to offer a luxurious and spacious experience. The cabin is equipped with multiple screens, and the second-row seats provide first-class comfort with adjustable settings, built-in speakers, and ambient lighting. Passengers can control many functions through a touchscreen embedded in the armrest. The screens on the back of the front seats are even removable, adding a touch of flexibility for entertainment. While the third-row seating may offer less luxury, it comfortably accommodates three passengers.

Impressive Range and Power

On the technical front, the Model D is powered by a 100 to 120 kWh LFP battery, operating at 800 volts. This setup promises a range of over 650 km, offering competitive performance in the electric vehicle market.

Alongside the Model D, Foxconn also unveiled the Model U, a mid-size bus designed to complement the company’s existing Model T large bus, further expanding Foxconn's footprint in the world of electric transportation.
